The National Institutes of Health will join President Donald Trump’s Genesis Mission, committing federal resources to accelerate biomedical discovery through artificial intelligence, the Department of Health and Human Services announced July 22.

HHS outlined plans to support AI-driven research in chronic disease, pediatric cancer, and drug development as part of the broader White House rollout of more than $5B in federal commitments across 15 agencies. The initiative began as a Department of Energy effort under a November 2025 executive order and has since expanded government-wide.

The agency will contribute to projects involving autonomous laboratories and AI models designed to make biological systems more predictable. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made chronic disease a key priority, and the new AI push aligns with that focus.

The Genesis Mission represents one of the largest coordinated federal AI investments in science, pulling together research awards, specialized datasets, and computing infrastructure from agencies including HHS, the Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation.
