Somebody has to answer when a screening program misses a cancer, and in Europe that person has traditionally been a radiologist looking at a mammogram. Stockholm County has now made room for software in that process, giving Lunit’s INSIGHT MMG an independent reading role across the region’s entire breast screening service.
Sectra, a Swedish imaging vendor, is supplying the systems. Screening reads will run at Karolinska University Hospital, Sodersjukhuset and Capio St Goran, the site that piloted the setup. The contract was announced on September 28.
That pilot site has used the software in place of a reader since 2023, putting roughly 200,000 mammograms through it over three years. The supporting evidence came from ScreenTrustCAD, a prospective study of about 55,000 women screened between April 2021 and June 2022, where a radiologist working with AI found more cancers than the usual two-reader arrangement. Results ran in The Lancet Digital Health in 2023.
Stockholm is the second Swedish region to sign on. The shift carries weight beyond one county. European programs have hesitated to let an algorithm hold a screening seat by itself, and a regional contract hands other health systems both a template and a liability question to work through.
