GE HealthCare has launched a new automated breast ultrasound system and a browser-based remote viewing platform aimed at expanding supplemental screening for women with dense breasts. The company debuted Invenia ABUS Prime and ABUS StreamVue this week, both cleared by the FDA and CE marked.
Invenia ABUS Prime uses AI tools from GE HealthCare’s Verisound platform, including scan quality assessment and automatic nipple detection, to help technologists capture consistent, reproducible 3D images. A Fast Scan feature boosts scanning speed by up to 40 percent compared with the previous Invenia ABUS 2.0 system. A redesigned transducer and adjustable compression levels are meant to improve patient comfort during the exam.
ABUS StreamVue is a browser-based reading platform that lets radiologists review exams remotely across enterprise imaging networks and breast imaging centers. GE HealthCare built the viewer with Candelis, and the system also supports QVCAD, an AI-assisted reading tool that highlights potential lesions to streamline image review. The first U.S. installation is at BeSound, a Los Angeles breast imaging provider that plans a mobile screening unit to bring supplemental imaging closer to patients.
Roughly 40 percent of women aged 40 to 74, about 25 million people, have dense breast tissue, which can hide cancers on a mammogram and is itself tied to higher breast cancer risk. Since September 2024, FDA rules have required mammography facilities to tell patients about their density and note that additional imaging may help.
The launch follows GE HealthCare’s $2.3B acquisition of Intelerad in March, which expanded its cloud-based enterprise imaging and AI portfolio.
