Federal health regulators hosted leaders from 10 technology companies at a closed-door “clinical AI demo day” last month, as FDA and CMS officials look to safely boost adoption of artificial intelligence in health care.

The July 8 event at the FDA’s White Oak headquarters brought together Anthropic, Counsel Health, Curai, K Health, Microsoft AI, Amazon One Medical, Doctronic, Ellipsis Health, Hippocratic AI and Welldoc, according to an agenda reviewed by STAT.

The demo gave federal officials a hands-on look at how AI doctor tools operate today. For the invited companies, which range from tech giants to startups backed by investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Khosla Ventures, the session was a rare opening to influence policy. Regulators are still deciding how to oversee health AI and what to pay for it.

The meetings were never publicly announced. STAT interviewed executives from four of the firms – Counsel Health, K Health, Hippocratic AI and Ellipsis Health – who recounted their discussions with regulators.

The demo day reflects a broader push by the health department and its subagencies to boost clinical AI adoption, and comes as payment and evaluation questions for AI tools remain unresolved.
