OpenAI Foundation, the nonprofit that governs OpenAI, pledged $100 million to a new public health initiative run with the Common Health Coalition. The Breakthroughs to Follow-Through Initiative will help states and local jurisdictions apply AI tools to accelerate the delivery of medical treatments for serious conditions.

The first focus is hepatitis C treatment development. The money flows through local organizations and nonprofits. Grants land first in Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts, and more states join within six months. Tool selection stays in local hands, including whether generative AI fits a project.

Anna Makanju, head of AI for civil society and philanthropy at OpenAI Foundation, said the grants are not tied to any single AI platform, giving partners the agency to pick what works for their communities. Dave Chokshi, chair of the Common Health Coalition, said the tools could range from identifying people overdue for screening to outreach platforms, AI copilots for clinicians, and navigation tools that keep patients on track through a cure.

The initiative also provides technical support to help partners move from pilot projects into full deployment. Chokshi said the coalition remains open to working with the federal government as the program develops.
