Specialty referral intake now has an automated option. This week Assort Health pushed Referrals to general availability, an agent that takes over inbound referral intake. Provider matching and appointment booking run in the same loop.

The agent ingests referral documents from e-faxes, scanned PDFs, EHR feeds and phone calls, then structures the data with the company’s Synapse model, which is trained on more than 225 million specialty-specific records. It applies rules across orthopedics, ENT, gastroenterology and other high-volume fields, and it flags a better-fit provider than the one originally named in half of inbound referrals.

Early results come from the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics, where the agent automated roughly 90 percent of end-to-end referrals, converted 77 percent, and cut patient outreach from days to hours.

The rollout follows a $120M Series C for Assort Health and the hiring of Dr. Sunny Eappen as chief medical officer. A new Patient Journey Memory framework keeps context across outreach channels.

Referral leakage is a quiet cost center in US healthcare. Patients referred to specialists often wait days while staff re-key faxed data, verify insurance and chase schedules, and many simply give up. An agent that completes the loop autonomously attacks both the administrative backlog and the revenue loss that follows.
