A $31 million Series A led by Oak HC/FT has closed for Vitalize, whose AI-native software helps health systems track labor and bed capacity in real time. Norwest, .406 Ventures, Constellation Ventures, Y Combinator, Rock Health Capital and MemorialCare Innovation Fund joined the round.
Hospitals spend heavily on people, and the San Francisco company points to labor as the sector’s single largest expense line. It accounts for 50% to 60% of hospital operating costs, or close to $1 trillion in yearly spending nationwide.
Firefighting mode
Hand-building schedules, chasing HR compliance and reworking plans whenever a department’s capacity moves can consume half a clinical leader’s day. When demand cannot be forecast, one large health system may burn past $100 million annually on premium overtime and agency labor simply to hold coverage.
Beds make up the other side of the ledger. Revenue hinges on getting the right patients into the right beds with the right staff, but plenty of organizations still treat those two decisions as unrelated. Vitalize markets itself as a layer that coordinates both, borrowing the air traffic control image for scheduling as it happens.
Growth is the stated use for the money. The round lands amid a broader wave of backing for hospital back-office AI, where vendors contend that operational savings show up sooner than clinical ones.
