OpenAI-backed Coherence Neuro banks $45M for a talking brain implant

Coherence Neuro has raised $45M for an implant that records tumour signals and stimulates them, though human data remains limited to brief surgical recordings.

Coherence Neuro has raised $45M to push an electronic implant that listens to brain tumours deeper into human testing, with the OpenAI Startup Fund and Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund leading the round.

The device, called SOMA, is designed to record the electrical chatter of a tumour and then deliver targeted stimulation meant to interrupt its growth. It pairs with a removable over-ear wearable and an app that tracks symptoms and therapy history.

Those AI models have not faced a large human trial. Coherence says they were trained on animal recordings and can classify a tumour as growing, shrinking or returning.

Human exposure so far is thin. The implant sat in three patients for roughly 30 minutes during tumour-removal surgery at Royal Melbourne Hospital before removal, and recording or stimulation work has been reported or planned in seven more people.

That gap is the whole story. Electric-field therapy is already cleared for glioblastoma, but existing approval says nothing about whether SOMA is safe or works.

Coherence plans a first chronic implantation study and will seek FDA breakthrough device status. Neither has happened. The company describes the raise as a Series A, while WIRED reported it as seed funding. Lux Capital, 8VC and Matthew MacDougall, Neuralink’s head neurosurgeon, also took part.

For hospitals weighing neural interfaces, the lesson is that a well-funded brain-computer startup can arrive with animal models, a 30-minute data set and no chronic safety record. The clinical evidence has to catch up before procurement does.
