Robots are now filling prescriptions at Fairview Health Services. The Minnesota nonprofit installed a BD Vmax 160, a machine built for centralized, high-volume dispensing.
Fairview fills roughly 20,000 prescriptions a week across 25 outpatient pharmacies and mail-order services, and it is the first health system in the country to put the Vmax 160 to work. Demand keeps climbing for specialty therapies, biologics, GLP-1s and refrigerated medicines.
BD is highlighting several specs. Automated inventory replenishment through BD EasyLoad runs at a three-second-per-tote loading time with 99.8% accuracy. Labeling complies with all 50 states. Cold-chain storage covers the 2-8C range, and smart expiry detection blocks expired drugs from dispensing.
Pharmacy staffing is the pressure point. Health systems are automating dispensing and fulfillment as prescription volumes climb and pharmacies struggle to hire technicians, and BD is staking a claim in a growing field of pharmacy robotics vendors.
