As first reported by Med-Tech Insights, the UK has become the first country to join a newly formed global alliance of health regulators focused on the safe deployment of AI in medicine. The move places the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) at the core of international collaboration aimed at accelerating trusted AI integration into clinical settings, supporting faster diagnoses, easing NHS pressures, and advancing the UK’s health technology sector.

The UK joins the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network as a “pioneer country,” enabling the MHRA to collaborate with international regulators on setting safety standards, sharing early safety signals, and monitoring real-world AI tool performance. This partnership is intended to make AI applications in healthcare more reliable, ethical, and impactful for patients across the globe. Other countries are expected to join in the coming months.

Building on its domestic successes such as the AI Airlock – a regulatory sandbox allowing companies to trial AI tools alongside regulators – the MHRA will play a key role in shaping the network’s structure and priorities. Tools already tested through Airlock include AI models for early lung disease detection and personalized cancer treatments. Alongside updated regulatory guidance and reforms tailored to adaptive and generative AI, the MHRA is also working with NICE and the NHS to boost real-world data on AI performance.

The UK government emphasized that participation in the network aligns with its long-term health strategy and commitment to innovation. Senior officials, including Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Science Secretary Peter Kyle, highlighted the importance of global cooperation, ethical standards, and streamlined regulation to both improve patient outcomes and fuel economic growth through AI health technologies.

By joining the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network, the UK cements its role as a leader in responsible AI healthcare innovation. As it shapes global standards and deepens collaboration, the MHRA’s pioneering role could help usher in a new era of safer, smarter, and more effective digital health tools worldwide.
