As first reported by TechTarget, Health Level Seven International (HL7) has announced the launch of a new AI office dedicated to guiding the development and implementation of artificial intelligence in healthcare through a standards-based approach. Known for its role in creating interoperability standards like FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), HL7 aims to extend its influence into the AI space by focusing on safety, transparency, and ethical deployment. The initiative will be driven by four strategic pillars: standards development, global collaboration, responsible AI use, and innovation enablement.
Daniel Vreeman, DPT, HL7’s current chief standards development officer, has been appointed as the organization’s first chief AI officer. In this dual role, Vreeman will oversee AI strategy, lead anti-fraud initiatives, and engage with regulators and stakeholders to shape policy.

“With AI poised to transform healthcare, our aim is to enable trustworthy, powerful AI that helps everyone live in optimal health,” said Vreeman in the announcement. The AI office will focus on building an “AI-ready interoperability stack” that supports safe, explainable, and provenance-rich AI systems integrated into healthcare delivery.
HL7 plans to position itself as the global convener for responsible AI use in healthcare, bringing together diverse voices across the industry. Its AI office will also work to incubate AI-driven healthcare solutions and provide best practices to ensure safe, equitable, and transparent deployment. The organization’s broader goal is to ensure that AI technologies align with the needs of both clinicians and patients, while adhering to ethical and legal standards.
Standards and trust at the core of future AI innovations
Charles Jaffe, M.D., Ph.D., HL7’s CEO, emphasized that artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape the delivery, evaluation, and payment of healthcare. With this in mind, HL7’s AI office is designed to anchor AI innovations in proven, globally accepted standards to maximize safety and societal benefit. By focusing on transparency, interoperability, and collaboration, HL7 is aiming to lay the groundwork for a future where AI plays a transformative — but accountable — role in medicine.
HL7’s new AI office marks a pivotal step in bridging the gap between emerging technologies and healthcare’s demand for trust, safety, and standardization. As AI continues to expand its footprint in clinical settings, HL7’s leadership in setting ethical and interoperable frameworks ensures that innovation aligns with public health interests. Through this initiative, HL7 is not only shaping policy but also building the digital infrastructure for AI to deliver meaningful, responsible improvements in care worldwide.
