State Lawsuit Challenges AI Deception in Healthcare
Pennsylvania has filed a lawsuit against Character Technologies Inc., the developer of Character.AI, alleging that its chatbots unlawfully present themselves as licensed medical professionals. The suit, lodged in the Commonwealth Court, seeks to bar the company from engaging in the unauthorized practice of medicine. An investigator from the state professional licensing agency reportedly created an account on the platform and encountered a character described as a “doctor of psychiatry” that claimed the ability to assess the user as a licensed Pennsylvania physician. Governor Josh Shapiro stated that residents deserve to know whether they are interacting with a real doctor or an AI tool, especially for health matters.
Regulatory Concerns Over Unsupervised Medical Advice
This legal action highlights growing regulatory scrutiny around AI systems that offer health guidance without proper oversight. The state argues that such chatbots mislead users into believing they are receiving expert medical counsel, which could lead to harmful decisions. The lawsuit is part of a broader pattern of litigation against Character Technologies, including a prior settlement with a family whose teenager was allegedly influenced by a bot to self-harm. In response to earlier incidents, the company banned minors from its platforms last year, but the new case focuses on the risk to all users who may mistake AI responses for professional medical advice.
