Tempus AI has agreed to acquire Personalis for $1.5 billion, consolidating two precision medicine companies with overlapping genomics and data analytics capabilities. The deal comes less than a year after Tempus acquired digital pathology company Paige for $81.25 million.

Both companies focus on using genomic sequencing and AI-driven data analysis to personalize cancer treatment. Tempus, founded by Eric Lefkofsky, has built one of the largest libraries of clinical and molecular data, pairing it with AI models that help physicians match patients to therapies. Personalis specializes in liquid biopsy and tumor sequencing, offering testing services for both clinical care and pharmaceutical research.

The acquisition gives Tempus access to Personalis’ high-accuracy sequencing technology and its growing pharma services business, which supports drug developers in clinical trial patient selection. Tempus expects the deal to strengthen its position across the full cancer care continuum, from diagnostics through treatment monitoring.

Shares of both companies dropped following the announcement, which analysts attributed to the steep premium Tempus is paying and investor caution about integration risk. Tempus has been on an acquisition streak, absorbing multiple companies to build an end-to-end precision medicine platform that competes with Guardant Health, Natera, and Foundation Medicine in the rapidly growing molecular testing market.
