OpenAI is giving academic scientists free access to its most advanced models, with a heavy tilt toward biomedicine. The ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program will start with 10,000 researchers this summer and expand to as many as 100,000 through 2027.
Participants get the GPT-5.6 family across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, plus deep-research tools, higher usage limits and larger context windows. The package includes more than 75 life-science skills covering genetics, genomics, sequencing, single-cell analysis, protein modeling and drug discovery, along with connectors to scientific literature, public genomic and clinical databases, computational notebooks and reference managers.
OpenAI says researcher data will not train its models by default, and program workspaces carry business-grade privacy and security protections. Approved researchers can invite up to four collaborators from their institution, with each account counting toward the 100,000 ceiling. Applicants must be affiliated with degree-granting institutions with high research activity and must verify their affiliation and intended scientific use.
The program is part of a $250M pledge through 2027 to support external scientific research. OpenAI points to Boston Children’s Hospital’s “co-pilot geneticist” as an early proof point; the hospital says the system has produced more than 40 diagnoses for previously unresolved rare conditions and flagged new gene targets and potential therapeutic pathways.
The move extends OpenAI’s push into life sciences, following the January launch of ChatGPT for Healthcare and this week’s hospital deployment deal in Israel. For academic labs, the pitch is direct: frontier reasoning models, free, aimed squarely at genomic and drug discovery workflows.
