Flagship folds three biotechs into Etcelera to predict drug behaviour

Flagship Pioneering has merged Cellarity, Etiome and Empress Therapeutics into a single company betting that better causal biology data will rescue the one in two drugs that fail in Phase 2.

Flagship Pioneering has merged the technology platforms of three of its own portfolio companies into a single drug discovery business called Etcelera, uniting Cellarity, Etiome and Empress Therapeutics under one roof.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts venture engine said the combined company will chase what it calls causal intelligence in human biology: the ability to work out what actually drives a disease and to predict how a medicine will behave in patients before anyone runs a trial.

Why a merger instead of a new startup

Each of the three units approached the same problem from a different angle. Cellarity reads cell behaviour rather than single molecular targets, Etiome studies the early drivers of disease, and Empress Therapeutics works on small molecules derived from microbial chemistry.

Stacked together with Flagship’s internal AI models, the argument is that three partial views of biology add up to something closer to cause and effect.

Ad Rawcliffe, a veteran company builder, takes over as CEO. Alec Reynolds, a Flagship senior partner, will chair the board.

Small molecules first, then data services

Etcelera launches with programs already drawn from the three predecessor platforms in hematology, including myelofibrosis and essential thrombocythemia, in metabolism including partnered MASH work, and in immunology.

The company expects to sell high-impact partnerships and data services alongside its own pipeline, a model Flagship has used before to keep platform companies funded between milestones.

Flagship, founded in 2000, has originated more than 100 scientific ventures and reports about $14B under management. Noubar Afeyan, its founder and CEO, co-founded Etcelera.
