A vessel-sealing tool Medtronic already sells for open and laparoscopic work is now cleared for use on the company’s own surgical robot. Regulators granted the clearance for LigaSure aboard Hugo, Medtronic’s soft tissue robotic system.
LigaSure ranks among Medtronic’s most widely used instruments, with a track record spanning tens of millions of procedures. The clearance, disclosed Wednesday, pushes the instrument line onto the robotic platform and gives surgical teams energy tools they already know.
Medtronic filed its 510(k) paperwork in June. That request was one of several meant to grow the instrument catalogue for Hugo and widen the robot’s approved indications.
Intuitive Surgical dominates robotic surgery, and Medtronic wants share. Rather than ask hospitals to adopt an unfamiliar toolkit, the company pairs Hugo with energy instruments physicians already handle in non-robotic cases.
The clearance broadens the competitive field beyond hardware alone. Instrument breadth and clinical familiarity are increasingly deciding factors as more vendors field soft tissue robots.
