Patients increasingly begin a health search inside a chatbot. Zocdoc would rather those chatbots end the journey at a confirmed appointment than at a list of phone numbers.
The company opened its booking infrastructure to AI agents and named Instinct as its first partner. Instinct, a consumer assistant, will connect directly to Zocdoc’s MCP server to find providers, check insurance and reserve a slot on a patient’s behalf, with the rollout arriving over the coming weeks.
The case for doing this is measurable. Traffic to Zocdoc originating from AI agents has roughly doubled every 10 days since early September, according to chief executive Oliver Kharraz.
Healthcare resists automation for structural reasons. Provider directories are fragmented, insurance data goes stale, and reviews are frequently unverified. A confident agent can book a patient into a practice that closed a year ago or does not accept their plan.
Two decades of plumbing stand behind that promise, covering more than 200,000 verified providers plus 10,000-plus insurance plans and at least 175 scheduling integrations. The platform confirms the appointment inside the practice’s own calendar rather than relaying a request.
Kharraz argued that agents only improve access if they land on real openings with the right clinicians. Otherwise the convenience is theater.
Existing partners range from Google Gemini and Amazon Health AI to Yelp, Healthgrades and Blue Shield of California, with Instinct now added to that roster. The company is repositioning from marketplace to infrastructure.
The service-level pitch is stark. National average wait times exceed 31 days, while Zocdoc reports its typical appointment lands within 24 to 72 hours.
