Natera wins FDA breakthrough tag for a blood test that scans for 12 cancers

Natera’s multi-cancer early detection test has earned Breakthrough Device designation from the US Food and Drug Administration. The status does not authorize sales. It signals that the agency views the blood test as a novel tool aimed at a life-threatening condition, and it moves development and review onto a faster track.

Why signal origin mattersA crowded field

The assay reads cell-free DNA in a blood draw to look for signals from many cancer types at once. In granting the designation, the FDA weighed data spanning 12 cancer types and examined three measures that determine whether a screening test is genuinely useful: sensitivity, specificity, and cancer signal origin.

Why signal origin matters

Origin is the piece that decides what happens next for a patient. A positive result that cannot point toward a likely source sends people into the wrong workup, while a test that misses early tumors adds little for cancers with no guideline screen. Natera said its assay produced compelling results across all three measures.

“Too many cancers are diagnosed after they’ve progressed, simply because limited screening options exist,” said Alexey Aleshin, Natera’s corporate chief medical officer and general manager for oncology and early cancer detection.

A crowded field

Natera has spent years commercializing cell-free DNA testing in prenatal and oncology settings, and the MCED program extends that platform into population screening. It joins a growing group of blood-based screening developers chasing the same gap, including rivals that have pursued their own regulatory pathways.

Breakthrough designation brings more frequent FDA interaction and priority review, but approval still hinges on large prospective trials showing the test finds cancers early enough to change outcomes without burying clinics in false positives.
