Sopris Capital has acquired Blackford Analysis, an Edinburgh-based medical imaging AI platform, from Bayer. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The private equity firm plans to combine Blackford with its portfolio company Azra AI shortly after closing, while keeping Blackford a separate legal entity.
An app store for radiology AI
Blackford, founded in 2010, launched its orchestration platform in 2016. It gives hospitals a vendor-neutral layer to evaluate, deploy and manage imaging AI applications without building separate infrastructure for each tool.
The catalog spans more than 130 AI applications from over 45 partner vendors. That neutrality is the product’s value: radiology departments are drowning in point solutions, and someone has to manage them.
Stitching the patient journey
Azra AI focuses on identifying and tracking patients with cancer and other complex illnesses across their care. Sopris managing partner Abinav Sankar said the combination positions the portfolio to support patients from first scan through survivorship.
Blackford will keep operating in Scotland and the United States and continue serving its existing OEM and health system customers without disruption, according to the firms. Managing director James Holroyd called the deal a chance to accelerate growth.
For hospitals, the open question is whether a consolidation wave gives them fewer independent options – or stronger platforms to build on.
