Contract research organization ICON has struck a multi-year partnership with Anthropic that puts Claude at the center of its clinical trial operations. The deal, announced this week, targets the operational bottlenecks that slow drug development, starting with patient enrollment.

Claude will plug into ICON’s agentic AI platform Orbis, along with the OneSearch and OnePlan tools that handle site selection and study feasibility. The AI will also monitor enrollment in real time to flag risks before studies stall, support protocol design and scenario modeling, and feed ICON’s clinical knowledge into sponsor systems.

Anthropic says enrollment problems delay up to 80% of trials, calling the barrier operational rather than scientific. ICON CEO Barry Balfe said combining the company’s trial expertise with Anthropic’s frontier models should help sponsors make better decisions earlier and execute studies with greater precision.

Inside ICON, Claude will reach developers, knowledge teams and clinical staff through Claude Code, Claude and Claude Science, with support from Anthropic’s Life Sciences research team.

The pact extends Anthropic’s push into life sciences, which began with Claude for Life Sciences last October and Claude for Healthcare in January, followed by a $400M acquisition of Coefficient Bio and an enterprise-wide deal with Bristol Myers Squibb. It also arrives as the company rebuilds federal ties after a Department of Health and Human Services ban on Claude earlier this year.

The move signals how quickly frontier AI is shifting from lab research into trial operations, where most drugs fail on execution rather than science.
