Boston’s newest pharma research site has opened. Roche and Genentech are the tenants, working out of Harvard’s Enterprise Research Campus in Allston.

Inside, discovery researchers, clinical development teams and AI and data science specialists share one building, anchoring the group’s cardiovascular, renal and metabolism work. A 10-year lease covers 95,000 square feet with room for up to 500 people.

The opening is part of a $50 billion US manufacturing and research commitment, following milestones in Holly Springs, North Carolina and Hillsboro, Oregon. Chief executive Thomas Schinecker framed the Boston investment as central to expanding the group’s US research and production footprint.

Two strands of discovery work have run through Boston. One targets antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The other applies AI to cancer research, hunting targeted treatment approaches and studying how new cancer drugs perform in trials.

The center arrives as large pharma groups compete for a finite pool of AI and computational biology talent concentrated in a handful of US clusters.
