GE HealthCare has handed its AI agenda to Rodolphe Katra, who inherits 134 FDA-cleared AI-enabled devices, a portfolio the company says is the industry’s largest.

Katra joins from Medtronic, where he served three years as chief AI officer. He replaces Parminder Bhatia, who left GE HealthCare in July, and reports to Taha Kass-Hout, the company’s global chief science and technology officer.

At Medtronic, Katra built that company’s first enterprise-wide AI center of excellence, wrote its AI governance framework and pushed adoption across 15 business units in more than 160 countries. He has 25 years in the industry.

The appointment lands at an unsettled moment. Hospitals are adopting more AI while regulators, insurers and clinicians demand evidence that it improves outcomes.

Katra’s background in governance and scaled deployment, rather than pure research, fits a company trying to prove its installed base of cleared devices translates into measurable clinical value. Chief executive Peter Arduini said the goal is connecting devices, software and data so clinicians gain better longitudinal understanding and more precise care.
