Ellipsis Health has acquired Kouper Health, folding native electronic health record integrations into its conversational care manager Sage. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The gap the deal closes
Sage runs on Ellipsis’s Empathy Engine, trained on more than three million clinically labeled conversations, and reads vocal cues to detect distress and adjust its responses. It handles enrollment, standardized assessments, medication adherence and post-discharge follow-up over phone and text.
What it could not do was finish the job. Identifying a patient at risk during outreach is only useful if someone books the follow-up visit.
What Kouper brings
Kouper, founded in 2022 and backed by CVS Health Ventures, General Catalyst and 25madison, builds agents that operate inside existing provider systems and stitch scattered touchpoints into a continuous patient record. Combined with Sage, the platform can match a patient to an in-network clinician and schedule inside Epic, Oracle Health or athenahealth without a human coordinator.
Ellipsis reports sixfold faster enrollment in care management programs, a 60% cut in administrative tasks and up to sevenfold returns across deployments. It serves seven of the 20 largest US health plans.
The unglamorous bottleneck
Seventy-five percent of US health systems have deployed at least one AI tool, up from 59% in 2025. Workforce capacity has not moved with it. Both companies keep their brands and customers for now, with combined health-system products expected in the coming months.
