Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Amazon Web Services have signed a collaboration aimed at developing and commercializing biomarkers and diagnostics. AWS is supplying cloud, AI, machine learning and high-performance computing muscle to Columbia researchers.

The idea is to speed up work on large, complex datasets and help teams build models that predict health outcomes. AWS is paying for access through promotional cloud credits aimed at three groups: early-career faculty chasing biomarker discovery, faculty running sponsored research and proof-of-concept studies, and faculty forming startups.

A secure online research portal is part of the package, built to satisfy Columbia’s biomedical research, security and compliance rules.

Despina Kontos, the medical center’s chief research information officer, framed the deal as a way to give Columbia’s research community top-tier computational resources.

It follows a familiar playbook for cloud vendors fighting over life sciences workloads. Providers trade compute and credits for early access to academic pipelines that could turn into long-term customers, and for the credibility that comes with published research.
