The caregiver shortage in American home care has an unlikely candidate supplier: the patient’s own relatives, paid and certified to do the job. That is the model Abby Care sells, and investors have now put $82 million behind it in a Series C the San Francisco company announced on October 15.

Transformation Capital took the lead. Frist Cressey Ventures, Pivotal Ventures and CVS Health Ventures are the newcomers. Khosla Ventures, Thrive Capital and Sequoia Capital came back.

A daughter instead of a hired aide

Relatives are trained and certified by the platform to provide paid care for people with long-term or complex needs. A registered nurse care manager is assigned to each caregiver for clinical oversight, and the software gives care teams a live view of what actually happens in the home.

Havi Nguyen, founder and chief executive, framed the thesis as pairing the person who already knows the family member best with clinical supervision and technology.

Patient census has grown more than fivefold since a Series B led by Thrive Capital in the third quarter of 2024. Eight states are live today, with more markets on the way.

Fraud prevention is the selling point

Capacity is only half the pitch to payers. The other half is program integrity: verified records and transparency tooling positioned as a defense against fraud, waste and abuse in home care, a persistent problem wherever relatives are on the payroll.

What home care requires, in the view of Payal Parikh at CVS Health Ventures, is a workforce answer rather than incremental tooling.

Market expansion, more AI and clinical research, and deeper health plan partnerships are what the capital buys.

In home care, the labor shortage rather than the technology sets the ceiling.
