Ackman’s first private check buys into a 1,024-electrode brain implant

The Ackman-backed round funds a surface array that reads brain signals without pushing electrodes into tissue.

Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square and the Ackman Oxman Institute co-led a $250M Series D for Precision Neuroscience, with an unnamed life sciences fund also participating. The round was oversubscribed. For the Institute, founded by Ackman and his wife Neri Oxman, it is a first investment. The capital supports the company’s brain-computer interface along with manufacturing and clinical buildout.

The New York company was founded in 2021 by CEO Michael Mager and neurosurgeon Benjamin Rapoport, who spent a year on Neuralink’s founding team before choosing a less invasive path.

A film thinner than a hair

Precision’s Layer 7 array rests on the surface of the brain instead of penetrating tissue. The device packs 1,024 electrodes onto a film thinner than a human hair and about the size of a postage stamp, and it converts recorded brain activity into commands for digital devices. It holds FDA clearance for implantation of up to 30 days to map brain activity.

Mager said the company has assembled the clinical network, regulatory position and manufacturing base the field requires.

The round lands in a crowded funding wave, with Science Corporation at $230M and Merge Labs at $252M. Precision’s bet is that a surface array will clear safety and adoption hurdles that deeper implants struggle with.

What the company has not shown publicly is how many electrodes can stream at once in a human, or how the film performs beyond a temporary mapping window.
