AstraZeneca signs an AI discovery pact worth up to $1.5B

The British drugmaker is pairing its cardiometabolic pipeline with insitro's Virtual Human platform, but only $40M is committed up front.

AstraZeneca has signed a multi-year drug-discovery collaboration with the AI biotech insitro, aimed at finding new targets in liver and heart disease. The companies put the deal’s headline value at up to $1.5 billion, though only a small slice is guaranteed.

Upfront, AstraZeneca pays $40 million. The remaining roughly $1.46 billion rides on development and commercial milestones, and insitro would also collect single-digit royalties on global sales. The two sides split the work: targets AstraZeneca nominates are carried to a development candidate by insitro’s Virtual Human platform, which roots out the biology behind each disease. Clinical development then falls to AstraZeneca, which keeps exclusive worldwide rights.

The modest upfront mirrors a pattern now common in pharma AI pacts. In one deal struck two days before this one, Generate Biomedicines stands to collect nearly $1.2 billion in milestones for AI-designed obesity drugs, while Zealand Pharma committed $30 million upfront. Committed cash stayed under 3 percent of the headline number in both arrangements.

AstraZeneca spent $13.85 billion on research and development in 2025, up from $8.05 billion in 2021, which makes the $40 million upfront roughly a day of spending. Chief executive Pascal Soriot said in July that the company does not need more business development to hit its targets. Researchers have long failed to pin down root biology in the two diseases this deal targets, and that is what AstraZeneca is buying a shot at.
