NeoGenomics bets on an open platform to scale digital pathology

The cancer diagnostics company is standardizing on a vendor-neutral image platform so it can plug in third-party AI tools without rebuilding its stack.

Digital pathology is moving from a slide-scanning convenience to the layer cancer programs build their diagnostic strategy on, and NeoGenomics has decided an open, vendor-neutral platform should sit underneath it. The Fort Myers, Florida diagnostics company expanded its partnership with Indica Labs, selecting the HALO AP system as the cloud-based foundation for its digital pathology operations.

Because HALO AP is built to manage images without locking a lab to one algorithm vendor, NeoGenomics can bolt on third-party tools or models it develops itself while keeping integration costs and slide-handling overhead in check. The company frames that flexibility as a way to hand customers advanced digital capabilities without forcing heavy capital spending, difficult IT projects or disruptive change management.

“This strategic partnership is vital to the future of integrated oncology diagnostics,” said Warren Stone, the company’s president and chief operating officer. He described the aim as steadier workflows for pathologists and clinicians, telling both groups the arrangement deepens a relationship that reaches back to 2015 rather than starting a new one.

Dr. Beth Palla, who heads breast pathology at Scripps Clinic Medical Group, called dependable image analysis essential to accurate breast cancer diagnosis and said she expects the broader capabilities to reshape day-to-day practice. As scanners, image repositories and algorithms jostle to become the default layer under cancer diagnostics, an open platform lets a lab swap models when the biomarker landscape shifts.
